Your problem my be low oil pressure. When you start your truck it has cold, very thick oil as it sets in the driveway and warms up the oil gets hot and thinner. When you drive to work the engine runs at higer RPM which runs the oil pump at a higer RPM increacing oil pressure and quiting oil starved lifters. To see if I am right hook up a mechanical guage.

what weight oil are you using? should be using 5w30. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil for the noise.

Have the same problem on the Ranger too, just a loud clicking noise, only mine happens most of the time (regardless of motor temp) in the 1100-1400 range, and 2200-2400 RPM range, same with you? I dont know though, is there a chance that it could be something behind the timing belt cover? I cant quiet figure out if it's coming from the top of the motor, or the front, any suggestions?

the 90 ford ranger has a built in timing chain,no timing belt.you would have to have, the engine taken apart,to get to the timing chain.

in response to toms reply,if my ranger has low oil pressure, what do i do?cant afford a rebuild yet,and i get regular oil changes.i was told by my mechanic, that sometimes, there is not much you caan do,about noisy lifters.i wont worry about it,truck runs good, cept for the occassional, ticking noise.

you should be using 5w30 especially this time of year. 10w isn't thin enough, imho

lynxcat, the 2.3 is the four banger and the 2.9 is a V-6.

dear friends
dont't confuse oil level with oil pressure.I see a rebuld in your future.I take that you aren't a shade tree mechanic. use 30w for max oil pressure. if you want to repair your motor talk to ;me or your friends ,a good machinc shop. Now use your head ,if you don't have any money, sell this truck to a salvage yard
