I have been hanging around this site for a while now, and it still amazes me why everyone is so concerned about MPG (except for tn mack, his MPG really sucks) I bought my truck to pull a big trailer. I bought it for the TQ, my v10 just could not do it. If I want MPG, I will by a Focus or some small GoPed. My truck is not about MPG, if any of you remember when Chevy had the 427 in a truck and the big Ford motors they were rotten at getting MPG, (didn’t pull half as good as a diesel) and I really don’t care what Ford advertises……………they are not under real world towing conditions when publishing MPG. There is a direct relationship between HP and amount of fuel used. Also EACH PERSON IS TO BIG A VARIABLE for Ford to account for, we all have very different driving styles, couple hat with temperature fuel types so on, and so on.
REMEMBER anything under 40 degrees you lose 15/20%

These complaints about the difference of 1.3 to even as high as 3.4 less MPG……..do the math.
10K worth of miles at 17.8 MPG = 561 gallons
10K worth of miles at 3.4 less @14.4 = 694 gallons
Diff of = 132 gallons X 1.65 = 218.00 dollars

218. Dollars over 10 thousand miles, heck we will go out and buy a grill that cost more than that and never complain a bit.

tn mack has a very different situation, however most of us do not have those circumstances.

Tim,

All I want is what I had prior to the Oct flash. You are right. If I wanted mileage, I would have bought a hybrid. Other than that it's a good truck. "Fixing" an idle problem and reducing fuel economy 20% and decreasing acceleration performance as a result is not acceptable. Or is it? Everything I have heard from Ford is that they say they are aware of it and working on it. So isn't that an admission there is a problem with mileage?

Steve

As I said in previous posts I believe the people who owned the 7.3 prior to the 6.0 have grow to expect more mpgs based on there past trucks, those that are fist time diesel owners are not as concerned because of the fact they feel its a big truck and you should not expect good mpgs. The people that I know are contractors and the truck is part of there business and so worse mpgs result in lower profits, which is why many bought the 6.0 to increase the bottom line with what ford said was going to be a more fuel effcient engine. when many are getting less then 7.3 psd. I completely agree for the average guy its not a big concern but for the small business man It makes the difference.

You make a good point……………….I really do understand both sides.

As you know some who are complaining, "I get 18 and want 20, is not very real.
The bitching is not founded…...the contractor group is.

I am a contractor and in 2 months i put 5500 miles on mine, plus it idles alot , i bought a diesel for pulling and better fuel milage while pulling
if i drove 10 miles a day to work i wouldnt look at it at all but when my fuel bill is 500-600+ a month i keep a eye on it cause it is cutting into my profits

i fill up 3 times a week ?
average 25 gallons @ 1.75 a gallon = 43.75 x 3 times a week = 131.25 a week
4 weeks x 131.25 = 525 a month average in fuel bill

my fuel bill is more than my truck payment so it is something to watch

if i wanted 6-10 mpg i would of bought a v10

but the more it breaks in the better my milage seems to be getting also its getting hotter (in the 80's)

MY last diesel I had was 10 yrs ago and there is no conparison

2003 6.0 4x4

14500 Miles, No flashes, no mods.

16.5 in town

18-19 highway @75-80

I have noticed that 78 is the sweet spot where milage goes up. Over 80 and below 75 is drops.

I do have sepage on bell housing and occasional suge with cold engine takeoff.

I love this truck and would buy another 6.0 without a doubt.

Go to this thread, read completely…. Follow, on page 3..MLF250’s format, it is good…and easy! and post. Important update to instructions on page 6.
Most important part of this data...also, there “is” owners out there that have had no problems. To be fare to my methodology… I need the same from the “no problem” owners.. i.e. mileage (mileage is the odometer reading)
important a “no problem” statement if you have had none.

ODOMETER reading at time of problem is critical.
In addition, please read more instructions, bottom of first page, posted by Tim L
The simpler the writing (posting) of “problem/odometer” reading………….the easier it will be to collate.
Do not need many words, NO stories.
I must reduce all the date into a usable format; extra words will take more time to complete.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=185570

I implore all 6.0 owners to please take the time

Thanks
Tim

Tim,
When I first bought the truck in 2/03 it got @ 13.5MPG the gradually made it to 14.5 MPG.Had a flash in 8/03 then flashed again in 10/03 and then again in 12/03. Now it gets 13.1 MPG all the time. You're right, it could be the winter fuel. If I still have it when the weather gets warmer I'll recheck it.

If all holds true, and so far it has, with summer approaching you will probably be around 15.5/17.1
Do you leg it pretty hard at all?

I only baby it when it is cold. Once it warms up, I am pretty moderate on my driving. Except, I will jump on it getting on the freeway, beating traffic or dusting off a chebby.
