I found a '96 4.0L V6 4x4 explorer with 175,000 miles pretty cheap because the old "check engine" light is on and the owner didn't want to spend any more money on it.
The problem is is idles rough (<1,000 rpms) and is sluggish when it acclelerates through the lower gears. The previous owner had the plugs, plug wires, and coil pack replaced; as well as the transmission flushed and refilled (by the way the power steering fliud is gray instead of red, i'm a little concerned about that). The owner also said he took it to the ford dealer to run the codes and they told him it needs a new IAC valve. I replaced the valve and the check engine light came back on after running pretty good for a day.
Should i be concerned about the MAF? if so how should i check?
any help greatly appreciated!!!
I think you may have the two codes switched around. P0401 and P0402 are the EGR system. You might get that code because you may have a damaged DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback EGR sensor). I had that code last summer so I replaced the DPFE and the code just went away.
P0303 is a misfiring code for cylinder #3. Have you changed the spark plugs and wires?? If so, the wire might be either be defective or not directly connected. If you haven't replaced the plugs and wires, you should replace all of them now.
The dealer tuned it up (replaced plugs, wires, and coil pack) about 3 months ago. if i can prove it's related, i wonder if they will go back and fix it themselves?
Other than a simple fix like a bad plug wire, what's the worst case scenario?
Do you see the little plastic box right below the silver cylinder (IAC) with what seems to be two tubes on the left of the plastic box and an electrical connection toward the right side of the box and two bolts on the outer edge of it?? That's the DPFE. Replacement takes 5 minutes total. Just remember which rubber hose is in which tub because it'll cause problems. I bought this part from the dealer for $85. It's not cheap but it'll kill the CEL. If you have any more problems, please let me know.
