Well let me start by saying whats up to everybody Im a newbie here.
I got a 1998 Explorer XLT 5.0 AWD
The check engine light came on the other day and it was for egr valve and also a P0304 (cylinder 4 misfire). Seems to be pretty common around here. I have replaced the egr ,plugs ,wires, checked primary and secondary on the coils all came back good. I have also checked compression on the cylinders after the first crank they all were at 120+psi and after four cranks they ranged from 160 to 175psi which the haynes manual said was good. Engine is shaking now and driving very sluggish, also still reading P0304. When I took the #4 plug out it was wet and smelt like gas so injectors should be working. Any ideas what else to be looking for since this is my daily driver and only vehicle for a family of five?
Thank you in advance for any and all replies to this!
Sounds like a bad injector to me, the plug is probably fouled because the injector is leaking. To avoid wasting any money replacing parts that might not be the problem, have a shop that is good at electrical diagnostics check out the misfire. They will of course verify what you have already learned, and make sure that the plug is actually sparking, and then will test the electrical side of the injector to make sure it is getting the correct trigger pulses from the PCM. The will also test the resistance of the injector to see it is in specs. That will all be accompanied by a fuel pressure leakdown test to find out if any injectors are leaking. They might be able to forgo a few of these steps and come to a conclusion even faster. I haven't had to replace an injector on your engine, so I don't know how involved it is, but it shouldn't be too bad.
would an injector make the explorer "jump" also or would that possibly have something to do with the timing? and if so would there be something larger than just setting the timing?
Yesterday I filled the gas tank and within 5 minutes the explorer stopped shaking and I havent had a 304 code pop up since. I took it on the highway, drove around town and even went on back roads to gun it and still no codes. However I still get a slight jump on occasion.
