Changing #4 Spark Plug in a 4.0
I just changed all my plugs in my 95 Ranger 4.0L the other day. I'm just looking at my Haynes manual which lists the #4 cylinder as being the forward-most cylinder on the drives side of the truck. I can honestly say that I had no trouble changing the plugs off, and based on that, I would say that most anyone could do it. The hardest one for me was actually the back one on the drivers side (#6), I found that the EGR tubing was really in the way. When I changed mine off, all I brought out to the truck was a ratchet, a spark plug socket, an extension and a universal joint. Space is really tight in some spots, especially for someone my size, but I found that I could work around it by just sliding the spark plug socket onto the plug, then attaching the necessary extension or ratchet from there. I didn't have to remove any pumps or accessories. This was especially necessary on the passenger side of the engine with all the heater and a/c hoses.
Believe me, it can be done, just try different combinations of extensions/u-joints/ratchets etc.
Your trouble code may be caused by bad coil pack or wires as well. Be sure to use "double platinum" plugs. You won't be dissapointed.
Good luck.

FWIW, some people have resorted to taking off the tire and removing the splash guard and going at the plugs from that angle.
