fuel filter change

Good day all.

I have read some other posts on this issue, however, I am still having a heck of a time getting the filter off my 1998 ford ranger (2.5l). I have a plastic tool bought at O'rielys and got the tank side of filter off, now I cannot duplicate on engine side. Any body have any suggestions?

Mike,
I had a bugger of a time with my 98 3.0. I finally got it off, strangely enough mine was the opposite. The engine side was easier than the tank side. Both were difficult and required quite a bit of working it with a flat head screwdriver. It takes a little force but be careful, too much and you could damage the connectors or the line.

I had one heck of a time getting the one off my 98 4.0 I didn't know it had little tabs to hold it in. After about an hour of hard work and many choice words I saw the tabs with a flash light. Well it was getting dark and I had a 400 mile trip back to school. I got one end out but couldn't get the other ( I was using a screw driver) so I broke the filter off right at the large filter enclosed part. That gave me easy access to the tabs and out it came. Hope this helps just break it.

Thanks. I got it before I read your both your posts, but I had exaclty the same experinece. After one mangled "fuel filter tool", two bent screwdrivers and many bloody knuckles, I got it off. Of course it did not fix the rough idle problem I have been having. If you have any tips on cleaning fuel injectors let, feel free to share.

i used to have a hard time with those filters but i've got the technique down to a t!!! take the clips off, spray the fittings down with penetrating oil. when you push the tool in push the line into the filter while pushing on the tool. twist the line from side to side a bit and try to pull the tool open as far as you can while pushing the line away from the filter it will pop right off. using excess force doesn't help but wiggling the filter from side to side does. tips on cleaning fuel injectors?? get a shop to do it they have a special setup that uses pressureized canisters. your idle problems probably a dirty maf, bad iac, or dirty throttle body

Mike, I can only speak from personal experience and what I read here. I've seen several people talk about putting Gumout in the tank. There's also any number of fuel injector cleaners out there. I don't know which ones the senior members consider snake oil. There's also a thread which I hope Ken00, our illustrious moderator, can point you too. With out knowing all the symptoms, its hard to say what exactly you need to do. Is the CEL on? I know mine was and it was idling rough and it turned out I had a bad spark plug.

Thanks again for the feedback. I will get back to this posts with whatever I find the solution to be.

(Just for the record, I have not gotten a check engine light. Just a rough ilde "loop" when at a stop. I have changed my plugs, my PCV valve and now my fuel filter. Air filter has about 5,000 miles on it. Truck has (99,000)

Why not try running this puppy by the likes of Advance Auto or Auto Zone & let them scan the computer?

They'll do it at no charge, hoping to get to sell you a part, to fix your problem.

It could help you look to the root cause, system, or part, causing that rough idle.

Their scanners can monitor many things in real time, as well as read, set, or pending trouble codes. pawpaw

Well there could be pending codes, stored.
Some of these require several drive cycles to set the MIL.

They may be a portend of things to come.

I just scanned my Taurus to catch & confirm an intermittent speed sensor problem & also found a evap. purge solenoid problem I didn't know I had.

Neither problem lit the MIL. pawpaw

Thanks for the heads up. I will go ahead and pull them when I pick up my Gumout.

Have you changed the wires? Did you put dielectric grease on the boots when you changed the plugs?

You might want to check your oxygen sensor. If it hasnt been changed in the trucks lifetime it could probably use a new one. I dont know if that will be the cure for your rough idling problem but it wont hurt. It should help your gas mileage too. Good luck

I have considered an oxygen sensor. I did not see any recomendations for change on regular maintenace so I left it. Plus I think it was 40 bucks, which as mush as an IAC, which I may try before I do the oxygen sensor. Regarding wires and dielectric grease on the boots, I changed a couple wires that looked bad but not all, no grease, never used it before. I will add these to my list for the weekend.

Thanks again.

Well I pulled codes but there is nothing. I went ahead and put all new wires on to go with my new plugs and put some dialectic grease on. I also changed my IAC. I could go on to check ERG and MAF but am begining to think this might be a Vacum problem. Does anybody know if a vacume prob would show up on the Diagnostic?
