I have a 1990 F-250 460 CI. What wire is the Spout Connector? I want to time the engine and in order to do this I must disconnect the Spout Connector. Any other tips you want to add are OK with me. Thx- Anthony
Thanks. I unplugged the first harness coming from the distributor, but the truck would not start.
I traced the wires back and found one coming out of the bundle and going to what looked like a
capacitor. I unplugged that one and timed the engine. I think that it worked. I haven't had to
time an engine in 20 years, with all the computers and such making it unnecessary. Or so I
thought. The engine has been running poor lately and with gas as high as it is I had to do
something. I took it to a number of shops, even the dealer, and they all said that the ignition was
computer controlled and there was no adjustment. I just had to do it myself. Thanks again.

Way off. It should have been 10 Deg BTDC and it was about 2 Deg BTDC. I bought a code scanner and I'm getting a code (41) for the EGO sensor. The manual tells me not to do any repairs until I do all the tests, but when I check the ignition timing in the last part of the test (when the code scanner holds the RPM high) I should get a reading of 30 Deg BTDC, but I'm only getting about 22 Deg BTDC. The manual states I should check the computer timing advance circuits, which I don't know how to do. I have a Haynes Repair Manual, maybe I can find some info it. If you have any idea how to check the computer feel free to post back. Wish me luck- Anthony
Thanks. I have my play clothes right now and, between rain storms we're having right now, I'm going to put a voltage meter to the O2 sensor and see what happens. Keep your fingers crossed for me, it'll be a major break if that's the prob. Thanks again- Anthony.
Your "41" If I rember is "System Indicates Lean" There was a problem with a lot of the ECM's in those trucks. Some just kicked in the code for no reason. My 89 does it reg. Prob ignore that one. With the timing, how many miles are on your motor and how long since Timing chain change. It might be wore allowing the timing to float. It's a possible. Easy to check. put a rachet and socket on the crank and rotate the motor back and forth and check for delay on the rotor movement some delay is fine but excessive is not.
Yes, code 41 is lean. I have 115K miles on the truck and the timing chain has not been changed. After I replaced the O2 sensor and fixed the timing correctly the truck runs much better, but it's still not running right. I just gave up and dropped it off at a shop.
There was a Ford Service Bulletin that dicussed it The only way (they said) to fix it was ECM replacement. However no actuall problem existed. It applied to 89 and I belive 90 460's if I remember right.
Thanks for the tip. I think in my case the O2 sensor was out, since I have never had a code 41 sent before, and also the truck ran better after I replaced the sensor. BTW, the spout disconnect on my truck is on a wire connected to the ECM. It is disconnected by pulling out the gray square plastic connector.
