My 1977 F100 302 2bl is pinging almost all the time. I have changed the vacum advance, put higher octane fuel in and I canot stop it. Any one have any ideas for me on how to fix this I\i would greatly appreciate it.
Have you fixed the problem? If not Mine had the same problem. I checked the timing and it was a little high. Also check the EGR valve. That is supposed to inject a small amout of exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to stop exactly what yours is doing.
you better check your inital, mechanical, and advance timing. You won't want any more than 40 degrees total timing. Sometimes stuff wears in the dizzy as said above and the timing is then outta wack. I bet you have to much timing.
Well I used the MP-3 in the my 302, yes a bunch of smoke and carbon came out, changed the spark plugs and took it for a ride, it is still pinging. I ordered a distributor yesterday (stock) I will put it in on Saturday, I will let you know what happens.
I have another question can you or anyone else, direct me how to find a picture or a vacuum diagram of a 1977 Ford F100 Custom’s 302 2bl motor so I can see how the vacuum lines hook up. I would prefer a Polaroid or some kind of photo with the air cleaner off.
i had the pinging problem once and had bought the crane advance piece but it didn't work so i bought a new reman dizzy and set it to 10 bdtc. the trick part was that i put the bolt in and the truck ran good but when i had tightened the bolt all the way down the timing went off a gear so I had to advance it one tooth so that when I tightened the bolt I was right on.
are you sure that you have preignition? Have you read your plugs -do they have very small bits/***** of silver colored material on them - that is a sure sign of preignition/detonation , if your timing chain is worn that retards your valve timing and your ignition timing and shouldn't cause your problem , possibly a cracked exhaust manifold, most engines don't have preignition all the time and normally if they do they also run hot - is youtrs?
My 79 302 pinged bad when I was in high school. The problem I found was the aluminum plate under the carb that the egr valve is bolted to was cloged shut with carbon. Once I cleaned the ports out, the problem was drastically reduced. Higher octane took care of the rest.
You said that you changed the plugs. What did the old plugs look like? That's the secret to diagnosing these things. Rich, lean, blistered? Before you spend any more money, have you tried ckleaning out the carb? Also, the plugs that you took out. Were they running well at some point in the past and just starting pinging? Maybe a cooler plug could have been the answer? Just some questions that might make it easier for someone to come up with a solution to the problem. Good luck, John
