Severe pinging on acceleration

Hello,
I have a 74 302 in a Bronco. I have only driven it about 30 miles and have filled it with fresh fuel and added octane booster. I added the booster hoping it would correct the pinging. It seems to run fine at idle and runs out super but it does severely ping. Any suggestions that I may try before taking it to the shop would be appreciated.
Thanks Samo

What fuel/octane have you been running?
Even with the Octane booster, it may take several takes worth of driving to make a diference, if then.

Is vehicle new to you? If not, may have had this problem for some time.

Have you checked and kept the oil clean?

Check to make sure that the vaccum advance is not stuck. I had a 76 351m that pinged terribly when accelerating hard, which turned out to be because the vaccum advance was corroded enough to keep it from moving. I was able to free it up with wd40 and some wiggling, and sure enough, no more pinging.

Check the DPFE sensor...you can pick on up at the local parts store for around $60. If you're getting EGR codes from the CEL, this could easily be the problem. I've been running 93 octane and 89 with treatment, trying to smooth it out, but it just kept getting worse. I replaced the DPFE a couple of days ago, after visiting FTE, and the problem went away immediatly.

This is a new vehicle to me. And the first tank of fuel I have put in it. I used 89 octane and one can of 104 boost. The EGR has been disconected and plugged. Is there a way for me to check the vacumm advance without any equipment by myself.
Thanks Samo

No. Well maybe. You could remove the advance vacuum module from the distributor and test it.

You really need to check your engine timing with a timing light.

If you want to do it without tools I can tell you what I do. Take your wrench that fits the dist. clamp bolt and go for a drive. After it's warmed up, drive up a hill, if it pings then pull over and retard the timing a little. Do this over and over until the pinging stops. Your timing is set. I usually do this on a hill and set the timing so it just starts to ping when I have my foot a little heavy on the gas.

Thanks,

I will try the timing and then take it out and see if I can get it to settle down.
