Ford should get ready to pay

I've got a 2000 Excursion with psd. Have had 4 Firestone tire failures. Three on right rear. Last problem in July, 2003. Ford Dealership in Jackson MS couldn't have been more of a jerk. Blamed the problems on me not checking air pressure each time we cranked the engine. Last problem did over $1800 body damage. Changed to Michlen E rated, 10 ply & fixed the body. Started a crusade, documents, pictures, lawyers, but have not had much success. This admission we need 10 ply tires is the actual problem, and Ford should now have a different attitude. I hate that at least 5 people have died because of poor engineering between Ford & Firestone. I like my Excursion, but don't like the dealership. I'll keep you guys updated on our progress.

Does anyone have the BFG's now ? I am just wondering about road noise. They have a fairly aggressive tread. I was not happy with the Firestones in the snow anyway. I am leaning towards the BFG.

I'm not sure why you think the BFG is a better tire. If you go to The Tire Rack (Link) you'll see that the Pirelli Scorpion A/T has much better ratings from customers than the BFG..... especially the wet road traction (which is why I never buy Michelin's).

I wanted to do the exact same thing. The Firestone dealer near me said I coluld for a $35/tire additional cost. However, the 285's are only an 8ply (load range D) tire. If you do not tow a heavy trailer, or do not carry a heavy load, then I would think you would be ok. I do, however, tow a very heavy trailer (8,000 lbs) so I did not want to take a chance with the larger trailer. The 265 Revo's are a 10ply (load range E) tire which is much better for towing. This is what I went with for $25/tire additional cost.

I only thought the BFG were better than the Firestones Have not looked at the Pirellis yet. Are they good in the snow.

The local Firestone wouldn't even deal. I have a buddy that is a Dobbs tire manager...he said the Pirelli's would be the best choice. I still want 285's though.

I would argue any dealer that says you can ONLY have the replacements offered. If the replacements are not satisfactory to the consumer (they're unacceptable to me), I would think they'd have to simply pay the difference between their cost (not the retail price) and the consumer's desire. If they only allow me $50 per tire, then I'm still ahead of the game. The main thing for them to accomplish is to collect all of the recalled tires. They (the dealers) should have no decision-making power in what the consumer desires for a replacement ... especially if the consumer is willing to pay the price differential.

Jus' my 2-cents worth .... I'm looking forward to a hardy argument with the local Ford and/or Firestone dealers (I'm kinda belligerent that way).

Interesting -- I talked with one of the local Firestone dealers and asked him about upgrading to the Revos and he said no. "Firestone was very strict about only using the tires listed in the recall bulletin". My Ford dealer said he isn't likely to get any of the Pirellis (evidently they only get what Firestone/Ford sends them) and he recommended the BFG's anyway since the Pirellis "wear out too fast". Clearly I'm gonna take what I can get, but I'll be making some calls to Firestone and Ford Customer Service to see if I can't upgrade to the Revos. Should be interesting!!

Well, the Firestone dealer I went to hooked me up. I now have the 265 Revos and only had to pay $25/tire additional cost. He replaced my spare with one of the free replacements, as I didn't see the need to have a Revo as a spare too. The free replacement is the "new and improved" Steeltex A/T tire with 10 plys and an "E" load range rating.

Good for you! Glad you got what you (and I !!) wanted.

What state are you located in? Who is your Firestone dealer? (If he's close enough -- plan 'B' is a road trip!!!)
Thanks!

I live in Fraser Michigan. It is just north of Detroit. The Firestone Tire and Service Center is located at 32525 Gratiot, Roseville MI 48066. The phone # is (586) 294-5800. If I were you I would call a different Firestone location.

Rob,
Thanks for the info. Since I live in MN -- traveling to MI is going to be Plan 'D'!!

The dealer I talked to here told me that he had participated in a teleconference with the other dealers in the area and they were all of the same mind about this. We'll see.

Thanks again.
Chuck

Larger tire size often have a lower "Range" (i.e. D instead of E) but, the weight capability / # of plys, etc. is as much as an E rated tire of smaller size.

Don't let them give you any tire pressure B.S. I am religous about checking my tire pressure and I can assure you, that was NOT the reason for my blowout.

Looked at my tires Friday when I got home and they are the ones being replaced. Called the 1-800 number and a lady gave me three locations near me to call. I called the Tires Plus first and asked about paying the difference between the Firestones and a set of Michelins. Guy took my number and said he'd call back, but I didn't hear back from him and the Michelins they had weren't the exact tires I wanted. So, I went to the Firestone dealership Saturday and the guy ordered me 5 new Steeltex A/T Load Range E's and said they would probably be in this week. The original tires have 68,000 miles on them so I figured for no money out of my pocket I'll take another set and when I do change tires I'll get exactly what I want.
