could you be more specific about what your problem is? if your lights are flickering which is common the all you need to do is replace the voltage regualtor which is very simple. also repalcing the genator is very simple as well.
An easy way to test that. You have 3 wires going to the reglator. They are marked gen fld bat. Hook your volt meter to the gen wire should read 0. Start your engine should be 13 or 14. If not unhook the fld wire (the center wire) and touch it to the battery wire after the spark it should charging 14 or 15 volts. That will put the gen in full charge. If it dosent charge or has lots of sparks comming from the brush area then you have a gen problem. Then check to see if voltage is making it throu the reglator. Don't leave it hooked up to long like this. That should tell you were the problem may be. Also check the grounds.
Keep in mind a generator has to be turning about 1500 rpms before it produces its rated current. That's why the lights dim when your engine drops to idle speed.
I decided so far to keep the original voltage regulator and generator on my rig. But I did have a motor shop go over the generator when they put a new deal on the starter motor. I also replaced the regulator with a new one from Macs, and a new battery. Everything has to work just right to keep the battery topped off - make sure there aren't any high resistance connections at the battery, ground frame, regulator conections and all that. I have an extra ground strap running directly to starter from battery, &c. I also keep a float or trickle charge on the battery every couple months in storage.
