Last week I installed a rebuilt alt in my 96 Ranger 4 cyl. Today the voltage regulator tested bad. I double checked both of the wire harnesses to the alt and they look clean. Could do with some help.
Who tested the regulator? Is it a built-in regulator or a separate box? Did you note the resting [not running] battery voltage and the voltage when the engine is running?
If you think the regulator is bad, replace it. If the re-man alternator is defective, then it should be covered by warranty. At least for 30 days...

Most autoparts stores will/can do an in vehicle electrical system checkup with their portable tester, properly used it can likely spot or confirm the problem.
If it's the alternators voltage regulator, as tomw suggested, it should be under warranty.
If you have to replace the rebuilt alternator, or have it's regulator replaced, have that puppy bench checked before leaving with it. If you had the alternator rebuilt at a shop & they can't bench check it, most autoparts stores can do that, before you reinstall it.
If you bought a reman alternator at a store, have them bench test the replacement before leaving the store with it.
