I have a 97 4.0 ranger, and check engine light is comming on. It is a code P1443 the person that checked it from me says it is a dealer code and didn't know what it was. I have had it checked out once before by my mechanic and he said it is an Evap emissions code but didn't have a "smoke tester" (whatever that is) to find the problem. I have had the EGR valve replaced by the dealer and this light came on about 3 months later. There is also a sensor between canister and engine on the vacume line is there a way of testing this? Also vac lines look a bit dry is it worth changing the vac lines. Thanks for any help.
It's probably the purge control valve or the thermistor. I changed both on mine and the light went away. It could also be a bad vacuum hose or the canister may have failed, but probably the valve. You need a vacuum pump to test the system.
I did a Taurus recently that had that code and found the switch connector was loose/off and the vehicle had various vacuum leaks, especially near the back of the manifold. I would replace all the rubber lines and make sure the hard plastic lines are intact. After securing the connector and replacing the lines and clearing the code, the vehicle was fine.
Thanks all for the help!!! That was a good thread the ford part F57Z-9C87-BA Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
