I've done the search here and read the opinions but I need a few more opinions based on your luck with these products. Which do you think is better for an ignition upgrade/conversion from points, Mallroy or PerTronix? I'm tearing down the top half of the engine to replace the valve cover and intake gaskets, plus thermostat and while I'm in there upgrade the ignition plus coil, plugs, wires and a new cap. Thanks for your help. BTW 73, 302-2V stock to the bone.
I have used Mallory products and they are Great. Just follow the directions, make sure that you have a good ground for the module and that the voltage to the coil is 10v or less and it will last a long time!!
You will need a reman DS2 distributor and a DS2 ignition module. You can find those prices at your parts store. You will also need the DS2 wiring harness from a slavage yard. Or you can do what I do and get the whole rig with a wiring harness out of a salvage yard.
Test the distributor vacuum advance to make sure it does not leak. Test the distributor for side to side slop in the shaft. Make sure the distributor advance mechanisms are free and work. Take the pickup module and the ignition module to the parts store for testing. Check out the cap and rotor also. Sometimes you get real lucky and find almost new stuff Make sure you know what the stuff runs new/reman b4 you go to the salvage yard. Remember the salvage yard stuff may need repairs. Pesonally I would not pay more than the price of a distributor core for a used distributor. Find out how much the yard wants for the setup b4 you go into the yard, they always want more after you have pulled the parts.
