Hey guys, I know we've been talkin about this on another thread, but I want to know if anyone has any dealings with any other points conversion to electronic ignitions other than Pertronix? If any on you guys are runnin anything else step right up and brag about it or tell how junky it is? I'm goin to try to fire my 351 W in the near future, and want to get a distributor for it?I have an old points dist(just the housing) I don't have all the points and condensor and stuff? Just thought I'd get an opinion or 2??
For my application I was advised to use the pertronix conversion rather than a mallery electronic distributer mainly because of the advance curve of the stock distributer better fit my needs. It is a stock flathead used for pullin rather than a high rpm engine. I am very happy with it. It is good for the high rpm as well but I just don't need the high RPM capabilities. I noticed a big difference going up inclines or pulling something, also it does not smell as rich at idle. It took me about 15 min to install. I went to pertronix' web site and they have been in the game a long time. My wifes uncle put one on his 8N ford tractor and no longer has plug fouling problems. I will install one on my Ford 600 tractor very soon. It is well worth the 100 doller investment in my book. Hope that helps.
Truxx, I haven't tried any of the other products myself, you know, the old once bitten...
I may try something later, but right now I'll stick with points.
F6, I've heard and read alot of good stuff about the Pertronix, but when something like that happens to you late at night on an interstate with your wife riding with you you just get a little gun shy.
I should explain that I think my wife is a jinx anyway! I've had a flat tire with no spare, a flat with no jack, a dead battery on a Sunday getting ice cream, and a couple of other things that I don't remember with that woman in my truck.
On the other hand I've driven all over the 2 Carolinas by myself with no problems on several multi- hundred mile round trips.
To say she's not real fond of my truck would be an understatement!
