there was a thread a few weeks back, but this is a slightly different topic-
what do you think is the best way to upgrade the ignition in a '68 360? it's a daily driver- nothing fancy, but i would like a better throttle response, and more mileage.
here is what i think may be workable:
1. pertronix ignitor, and a hot coil
2. the above, plus a MSD 5 igniton control
3. duraspark upgrade
will the pertronix work with the msd? can the duraspark upgrade be done without replacing the distributor?
I'm running a '71 390 with a few modifications, which include a duraspark distributor, an LX 101 trigger box, jacobs 380672 coil and #8 computer. For me, the difference was dramatic! No misfires ever, no hesitation, instant cold starting. I'm running 080 plug gaps with autolite plugs. Just for information, the points run at 2.5 amps, duraspark at 4 amps, the jacobs computer at 8, lots more energy at the plugs. DF
Didn't notice a difference, but I didn't really pay attention before or after. Some of my benefit may have evaporated due to my heavy right foot with all the smooth new power, I did notice that I no longer had to warm the engine at all before driving off, it was ready to rock, even stone cold! That said, if everything is stock and properly in tune, ignition won't add anything. High powered ignitions really show their stuff when you have changed something, like I added a different cam, manifold, headers and carb, or when something is out of tune. If your plugs are dirty or the carb mixture is off, the aftermarket ignition may have enough power to light the fire anyway. DF
