Yesterday I turned on the ESOF and the 4x4 light illuminated in the dash and no four wheel drive. So I turned it off and you could hear a 2 or 3 second gear grinding. Today turned it on, worked a little then it disengaged agian. I know all about the ESOF not being reliable, use Warn, yada yada yada. ESOF is what I have and that is what I want. Any idea's why it would only partially work and what I can check to see why? Thanks!
If you hear a grinding, it sounds to me like the gear engaging the t-case is stripped. If it's working for a second or two then disengaging, it may not have enough to keep it engaged in the t-case.
Get the front wheels off the ground and turn on the 4WD. If you can still spin the tires and the driveshafts are not moving, it's vacuum related. If you can spin the tires and the driveshafts move, then the t-case is not engaging.
Tthat should at least narrow you down to vaccum or t-case motor / gear.
To me, knowing a LOT about all failure modes of ESOF hubs, it sounds like the hubs are not staying engaged.
The first vacuum pulse is 45 seconds long or so. If they stay locked for 45 seconds and then disengage, the hub is faulty. There is a toggle-type setup inside and if they are unlocking, that toggle setup is not latching in "lock".
First thing to try: Lock the hubs manually and see if you loose 4wd. If you still loose 4wd, sounds like the transfer case.
With the hubs not working correctly, the transfer case may not complete the shift into 4wd if you're moving. And if you are moving and the hubs aren't locking when you turn the switch, you WILL hear something as the transfer case shifts.
There's nothing wrong with my transfer case, but I did get some grinding noises in the transfer case with the front driveshaft speed-mismatch when I was having hub problems.
Try manually locking the hubs before we go any further.
UPDATE: Today when I turned the ESOF back on, it seemed like it stayed on correctly this time....what would if anything would this be different than already posted? Still at work and have not had time to do any of the diags above.
Well......my concern would be that grinding you were getting.
"Maybe" it was just a fluke thing and parts weren't quite lined up, but..............before it happens when you really need it, I would get that t-case engagement gear checked, along with the vac lines.

Random chance. Game Theory. Chaos Theory.
