I think I may have to replace my alternator in my truck. I was just wondering what size alternator I should get. My truck has a 5.0 L V8 (EFI). It does not have air conditioning. It is just a barebones truck with no high current pulling accesories. It does have a 1000 cold cranking amp battery.
I went to Ford and they said they had a 60 amp alternator listed for my truck. Is this the right one? Also, the voltage regulator is external on 85 F150's right? Because that makes a big difference.
For an 85, an internal regulator alternator is possible. Quick way to tell, an external regulator alternator has 3 wires going to it, and the regulator is on the pass. fender.
You can just see it in this picture, it's the grey box on the fender, between the solenoid and battery.
For an alternator, a good rule of thumb when replacing is to get the biggest one you can without having to modify any wiring.
Nothing short of the finest in anti-theft technology here...
The internal regulator alternator was a running change, I have seen 85's with and without them.
My F250, well, it's an 82 cab on an 86 chassis, and I just plugged the internal reg. alt. harness into the 82 cab harness... So, it's really possible for any 80-86 to have an internaly regulated alternator.
