Cool 10K mod

I just recently did the 10K mod on my '97 F-250 PSD 4X4. It works well but I've noticed if I'm idling through a parking lot or pulling up to a stop sign the idle is a little erratic until I completely stop. Is this normal with this mod or did I do something wrong? I followed the instructions to the letter with the exception of I used a 10K 1/2watt resistor instead of a 10K 1watt. (My local Radio Shack only carried the 10K 1/2 watt). Also, I'm interested in the difference between using a chip or a tuner, considering buying one or the other and would like some experienced input before making the purchase. I will be doing the downpipe and 4" exhaust at the same time as the chip/tuner install along with the necessary gauges. This truck only has 60,000 miles and I'm hoping the money I put into it will be well spent.

My truck sounds kind of like I put a big Cam in it since I did the 10k and that's when I'm coming to a stop. Sounds like yours is running normally.
I have a chip on my truck, never have used a tuner but I like the idea of being able to easily change programs with the tuner and to read codes as some will let you do. Go with the tuner and 4" exhaust and you should feel a good increase as well as a mileage increasse, just make sure to get some gauges at the same time!!

Thanks for the reply on the 10K mod, the truck runs great and now that you mentioned it, it does sound like a big cam in a gasser. I'm thinking along the same lines with the tuner, would be nice to be able to adjust to the needed power and read any codes as they occur.

Do either one of you have the instructions for the 10k Mod? Would you be able to email them to me or tell me where I can find them. I've tried searching this site for them but have had no luck. Thanks!

ramtruckman, I copied this from the page I found it on, it's a really simple application to make and install.

10k Resistor Mod
A 10k ohm resistor will raise the injection oil pressure approximately 200 psi. Increased injection pressure will deliver more fuel and will deliver more fuel sooner. This increase in fuel deliver and advance will yield higher combustion temperature but your exhaust gas temperature will remain almost steady. Such an efficient burn has it's down side. It will cause an idle rougher than stock. It may also cause the production of nitrous oxides. Thermal efficiency is a function of the high(absolute)temperature divided by low(absolute)temperature. In other words, the higher the peak combustion temperature in comparison to the exhaust temperature the more efficient is your engine.

Parts Needed
digital volt ohm meter
10k ohm resistor (1/2 or 1 watt)
2 fine copper wires 4" length
black tape
Procedure
1 Solder wire on resistor
2 Identify injection pressure sensor (on front of driver side cylinder head)
3 Test for voltage with key on and engine off

IPS has 3 connections:
+4.97V
+0.003V
+Output
Turn key off!
Connect resistor between output and 0.003V (do not cut any factory wires)
Slide fine wires into plug and reassemble
Cover bare wires with tape

I used a 1 watt .05 rated 10K resister. Soldered a 3" piece of wire on each side of the resister slide heat shrink over the entire part of the resister and about 1" of wire. Leave about 1" of the wire soldered on inside the heat shrink and seal each end to be sure with electrical tape. Then I stripped the wire back 1" I pulled out of the wire 5 strands and cut the rest away. Looking at the connector it looks like 2 eyes and a mouth put 1 wire in the right eye and the other in the mouth Blue/stripe and grey/stripe wire. I put the plug back into the ICP about 20 time until the check engine light did not come back on. If the check engine light comes back on you still have a open circuit. Just push it into there harder or pull it a part and put in again until no Check Engine Light comes on. It will if your work if you keep putting it in the plug and it seats.

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to try this out. Is the HP gain noticable? Is there any other potential negative effects other than the rough idle? Thanks agian!

Works great, just finished my mod too. Seems really good, no real roughness in the idle however, I did pick up about 300-400rpm at idle.

I don't what the HP gain is but the throttle response and overall perfomance is very noticable. The idle speed on my truck increased approx 200 rpm's, but it seems to run better overall. I have not seen or read about any negative effects this mod can or will cause. The informational knowledge from this site is great, these guys won't steer you wrong.

Instead of stripping the wire back and inserting it into the plug, I cut the wires off of another resistor and crimped them into butt connectors. The wires are long enough to back probe the connections in the plug by inserting by the original wires that go thru the rubber boot. I tied the butt connectors together with a small tie strap. I used speaker wire to connect the butt connectors to a relay switched by the accelerator pedal. I also have a toggle switch to turn it off .

Sorry Byrddog, I have not seen any pics on this mod, maybe one of the senior users has an idea where to find one.

mueckster,

I like the idea of adding a switch to the 10k mod. I'm having trouble understanding how you did this. I understand that you cut the tips off of one resistor and crimped them each into butt connectors. Did you still use another resistor and crimp it into the other end of the butt connectors or did you just use speaker wire. If you used both another resistor and speaker wire how did you hook it up. Did you connect both ends of the resistor along with speaker wire in the butt connectors? Bottom line is what allows the resistor to shut off? I hope my question makes sense. Does anybody have a diagram of the 10k mod with a switch? Thanks for all the help. The members of this site are fantastic, I have never witnessed such a willingness to help others I tip my hat to all of you who take the time and make the effort to solve other peoples problems.

Soder wire to both ends like IM1096 said. Go to here: great info for more info on all mods you can do to your truck. Recommend saving the link in your favorites folder.
