I have a 94 push rod 6 Explorer. 138,000, new tranny, air, etc. So, I plan on keeping this for a while.
It just started to show the signs of a radiator leak along the seams. I've had a quote on repair for an original radiator, or an after market radiator. About 100.00 dollars difference.
Depends on where the split is as to whether or not it is better getting it repaired. I had to have the filler neck repaired on my 92, and it only cost like $30.... so certainly cheaper then buying a new one. If the spilt is along the main seam... then for the peace of mind I would probably repalce it. Just my opinion... let us know how you make out.
Good question. The initial damage I can see is along the left top seam as you're looking down at the radiator from the front bumper. I'm going to replace the radiator, just curious as to people's results with the one I can buy from Ford, vs an after-market.
Any additional work I should look into with the radiator out of the vehicle? S Belt looks good. Water pump seems okay.
I replaced my '92 XLT with towing option radiator a couple of years ago with an aftermarket, and it's been fine. Only problem I've had is that it cooled too good, and I had to replace a thermostat this year, that had apparently stuck open = no heat. I bought the radiator from either Auto Zone or Advanced. I honestly don't remember which one, it's been a couple of years ago. If there's a question, I would certainly replace it. With the new radiator technologies coupling a composite tank with a metal heat exchanger, I have seen one fail and blow the tank off. It was on a pickup truck going by the fire dept. where I volunteer. Made a heck of a racket, and of course it resulted in an immediate halt to any continued running to prevent frying the motor.
YOU CAN GET A FACTORY RADIATOR UP HERE IN CANADA FOR ABOUT 220.00 DOLLARS ABOUT 20 MORE THAN THE AFTERMARKET
ONE. THE ONLY NICE THING ABOUT THE FORD ONE IS IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS DURING THE WARRANTY YOU CAN GO TO ANY FORD DEALER AND HAVE IT FIXED.
Most of the time, they carry Visteon radiators, which is basically OEM since Visteon manufactures radiators for Ford... and, the radiators are warrantied quite well.
It seems like late model Ford radiators are notorious for leaking at the plastic tank seam after about 100K miles.
