how much better will my new 302 with a mellings performance cam perform with the timing chain set to 0 or +4 advance. now it has the stock replacement timing set with the -4 deg in it.
I'll give it a shot.
It'll run better on the lower end.
It all relates to the cam center line profile.
For example, a cam center line profile of 107 degrees which is to be set in relation to piston TDC begins to open the valve at a certain spot. Advancing the cam timing to say 104 degrees center line opens the intake valve sooner moving your torque range down approximately 600 RPMs yet you sacrifice top end power.
So in your case being -4 degrees you have been set up for a higher RPM torque curve and in this case it's probably -4 degrees for emission purposes.
dont use a stock timming chain set with any aftermarket cam, go with a good quality timming set with a multi index crank sprocket, and if you cant get some one to degre the cam for you then install it straight-up (0) or 4 dgr adv. you'll always be safe straight up, a slight advance will give you a crisper throtle responce and lower your power band in the rpm range, in other words it will give your more on the bottom end and a little less on the top end.
