Not sure numbers-wise, but I always set my timing as far as I could. Advance it until the motor kicks back when I try to start it, then go back the other way a little bit at a time until it starts easily.
Thats pretty much max advance and my 292 loved it. I never have to do anything more than "bump" the starter and its running and ready to go, even when its cold.
kens64..thats the same method of setting the timing i use on my 54 239ohv.
i just twist the distributor till the engine sounds as if its running free,then back off just a few rpm's..some people are amazed how fast this engine will fire off..same as yours..even when its real cold..

54sbus's description of setting timing has been repeated so many times by other members, that I am a believer. I used to say 8 degrees, knowing that the book called for 6.
