Just a heads up for those who use very small shot for HD. A clerk in a CA convienence store was shot twice in the chest, at point blank range with 12ga birdshot and didn't die, in fact he made a full recovery. That isn't the kind of penetration i am looking for.

I keep a loaded 380 by my bedside i have no children to worry about. I am very safety contience ,sometimes people write or type things and dont quite explain things the way they meant to.i certainly hope that everything i say in any forum is not taken for verbatum.the only thing i was trying to say is every situation with a gun is different and the only continuem is the plan you set up in your own home for self defense.
Hey grizz...I have no beef with you and I'm sorry if you took it as such.
My beef was with another who
a) personnally attacked me by saying my opinion counts for nothing (funny in a forum such as this where discussion is based so much on personal opinion)
b) went so far as to suggest that my loved ones should be put up against an intruder
In fact, I totally agree with your final point...every situation is different. In your situation, a loaded handgun in the nightstand is probably the best defensive plan one can have. If I were in the same situation, I'd use a similar set up. With young children in the house (who I do train to be safety-conscious) who invite friends over to play (whose parents would have a justifiable coniption if they learned of any unlocked guns/ammo in my house), I have to find alternative protection.
Ok, i did personally attack you but don't start this other BS.
The thread originator (ExplorerSp0084) said: "also needs to be suitable for my girlfriend to not be afraid to use it."
I said: "bz919's opinion doesn't count from now on.
Let's put this guy's GF with nothing but a bat up against a fully alert, male, possibly drug crazed driminal with a good possibility of being armed. That's makes perfect sense. "
Notice the space between the two parts, seperating the sarcasm from the other part? I was using something called sarcasm, you may have heard of it.
To make it clearer, "Let's put ExplorerSp0084's GF with nothing but a bat up against a fully alert, male, possibly drug crazed driminal with a good possibility of being armed. That's makes perfect sense."
Edit to clear up.

I know the post got kinda off topic but just wanted to revive it with some great news. Went to sports authority set on buying a Remington 870 Home Defense version for 239.00. Well I got all the paperwork filled out, turns out there all out except for the display. Fine by me, well the clerk goes to get the box and the serial number from the box doesnt match the gun, by their rules they cant sell it to me. Alright Ill come back when they get some more right? Nope. Manager comes out says hell discount either a Mossberg to the same price (239.00) or the Remington 870 Magnum Marine to 300.00. Well after much deliberating I decided on the Remington Magnum Marine. Get it to the Cash register and the mangaer rings it up for 270.00! Needless to say I was a very satisfied customer. Also just wanted to say thx again to all that gave recomendations.
How about a single shot anything!!!. It will deter an intruder just as well as any gun out there. To bicker over any one brand when a 79.99 single shot will get the job done just as well and reloads very quickly with little pratice..... Or maybe a darton, jennings or mathews for the quiet stopper and no need to wake the family.
