ok Im sorry i did not mean to say just over the head of an outside perp , what i meant is fire a round in the air toward the sky.its the noise of the gun that scares the perp not the bullet the bullet is pretty close to silent except for the whizzzzzzz.////////////////ps i would like also to mention i would never take a bat to a gunfight...
whats your problem you are on the defense without cause,i never even addressed you and you come at me with daggers. You seem a bit distressed . I keep a loaded 380 by my bedside i have no children to worry about. I am very safety contience ,sometimes people write or type things and dont quite explain things the way they meant to.i certainly hope that everything i say in any forum is not taken for verbatum.the only thing i was trying to say is every situation with a gun is different and the only continuem is the plan you set up in your own home for self defense.
Relax, both of you (grizz & deersniper). Deersniper, please refrain from making direct attacks at other users. consider yourself warned, the next step a week break.

bz119 said my statement was less then brilliant and made a remark stating we may not be able to understand his first statement who is throwing rocks here? I am a very calm person but i dont like to be talked to in a very condensending manner.
Why a shot gun for self defense? Use a 38 special or a 9 round .22 pistol. Shotgun patterns to small in a house and only scares going through a wall or range plus it's going to be bulky. I have a semi-auto remington 1100 12ga. shotgun- love the gun, but it's the last one I would grab to defend myself in my home, that's what my AR14 full auto's for. Think small and light. Leave the shotguns for the birds.
well, i have a SEMI auto AR15, and if i were worried about penitrating a wall i wouldnt use the AR15. plus its about as bulky as my rem. 870 12 guage, and probably even heavier.
i'd vote for an 870 also..great shotgun, i own a 20 and a 12..and honestly i dont think gauge is a big issue if ur shooting down a hallway..a 12 will just have a lil bit bigger shot pattern..a lil bit bigger shot collumn..and be going faster most likely..which in all reality isnt that good of a thing..u dont want any roudns penetrating walls? any thing you shoot at 10 yards is gonna be a large slug basically, just punching through the body..and then ricocheting all over bones and internals...gauge is really not an issue here i dont believe..kinda like dead or deader lol, and shots..5 is plenty..just get something easy to handel...light...easy to swing..and KNOW HOW TO USE IT!, a gun isnt a safety measure if u cant use it..cant unlock it..cant get the safety off..load it..etc, esp when the perp gets the gun..thats the big deal with using safety weapons, they can and will be used against you if u dont use them correctly..make sure whoever is gonna be aroud them..uses em enough to be able to handle them in teh dead of night with adrenaline pumping..
my reason for a shotgun is that i can have great stopping power without having to worry much over penetration. a light load with small shot will be lethal, but not punch thru walls...
For home defense a shotgun is the best weapon you can use. Buck shot is not really needed, plain ol 6 shot can be deadly at close range. Don't know about the mansions some of ya'll live in but my house has maybe 40 ft as the longest shot I could get and that is up a flight of stairs. My main home defense gun is a Winchester M1300 defender pump 12ga.
A 870 rem is all thats needed. get a 20 gauge with number 2 shot. keep the gun near you when you are at rest or unaware. keep shells in or near the gun. i prefer to keep mine in the gun and keep the gun upstairs (bedroom). If you have kids maybe ADT is the way to go?? I have 2 kids grown and moved out so when i go to work i leave my wife a loaded gun and she knows how to use it..
