Shotgun recomendations.
Well I got great news from my uncle he has a remington 870 hes looking to sell. Its a 20 Gauge like I wanted but its got a 26" barrell. So question is where is a good place to buy a shorter barrel and also how much should I offer him? The gun is in excellent condition barely used been in his closet for years, so no rust or anything, wood stock also. Thanks again for all the help guys.
Pawn shops are a good place to get barrels, because most guns come with a few now, and they are easy to pawn off and you still have the gun.
How about an aluminum baseball bat?
Very light, very manuverable, and less likely to get you in a lawsuit after the fact.
I know it sounds a bit unorthodox, and doesn't directly answer the original question but here's what I'm thinking:
My own personal feelings are the best home defense weapon is a single shot 12 ga. Miss the first time, the bad guy can't take it away from you and use it on YOU. AS for what load to use, I prefer bird shot, as any buck shot is liable to travel through walls, could nail a neighbor!
But then again, I personally have a Bersa Thunder .45 ACP, which is probably overkill......... Both as a home protection and personal carry weapon. Nice lightweight, compact arm. I feel comfortable in having this around since I have no kids at home. When nieces come over, the Bersa has a nice trigger lock feature built into it too.

Let's put this guy's GF with nothing but a bat up against a fully alert, male, possibly drug crazed driminal with a good possibility of being armed. That's makes perfect sense.
I have a Mossberg 500 20ga. It has a 6-7 rd. magazine. The only thing I dont like, is that it has the 26-28" barrel on it. I would like to find a shorter one for it someday. But for now, I guess my SKS will have to do (even though the bullets are capable of going through the person and 1/4 mile down the road to the neighbors house...lol)
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
not really overkill i have a s&w 4506 .45acp loaded w/185 gr. corbon +p ammo in the safe next to my nightstand, backed up by a taurus 608 .357 mag w/125gr corbon .38spcl +p, plus a ruger mini 14 in the closet with a 30 rd clip of 50 gr .223 hp ..............i think i will stop their.

Mossberg 590, 12 gauge with extended magazine, used by MPs, etc., loaded with eight rounds of #4 buckshot.
i have a kimber cdp2 45 auto- a rugerp95dc 9mm auto- a sturm and ruger 357 magnum gp 100- a remington 30-06 auto rifle and a little bersa 380 auto and i use my little 380 auto for home defense. The trick is not to kill because it's not fun to kill in the first place,it's to protect, ive gone to the range at least 100 days a year for the last 25 years, not only should you be a excellent shot but you need a plan of action especially if you have a big family.if an intruder is outside your home shoot overhead to scare them off.if you have an intruder in the house first make sure his or her intent is harm then shoot to kill or at least to put their face to the floor. But exhaust all other possibilities before you shoot to kill. Its very important to atleast attempt to dial 911.
always, always always...remmember once you let that round go you own it, no matter what or who it hits (wheather it be in the house 1 block away or the 5 year old in the park 1/2 mile away) please do not shot into the air. if you discharge you weapon put the round somewhere its going to stop.
my dad always told me: don't point a gun at anything you don't want to shoot, and don't shoot at anything you don't want to kill

bz919's opinion doesn't count from now on.

Of course, the same disregard for what lies beyond the target is so often displayed by deer hunters, but that's a different issue altogether.
Most people lack the training and wherewithal to make split-second decisions in a high-stress, high-risk environment. I'm all for personal protection, including handguns & shotguns, but there are also alternative means to the same end.
If you reread my post (assuming you were able to get past the subject and first line), I indicated that in my situation, I'm protecting a wife (not GF) and young children...
In order to be effective to stop an intruder, drug-crazed, armed or otherwise, a weapon must be kept easily accessible, unlocked, and loaded. Statistically (another topic that may be over your head), the odds of a innocent child becoming injured or killed by an unsecured weapon are much higher than the odds of one's house being broken into.
