Shot gun choke ?

I want to get a new barrel for my 12 gage Mossberg. One that the choke can be adjusted. Is the kind that has the screw adjustment for all patterns any good, or should I get one that uses the different choke inserts ? I'm not going to run slugs through it.

I would get the barrel that uses the different inserts. Check out Brownells.com. They have a huge selection of barrels. I have a Mossberg 835 pump with choke tubes. Its my all around gun that I use for most of my shotgun hunting. Its camo with synthetic stocks. I use it when I hunt in places where I might scratch my shotguns with wood stocks. I never liked the type of choke that you turn to adjust. I don't like the big bulge on the end of my barrel.

I would look at cost. You can retrofit an existing barrel with a poli-choke if it has improved cylinder, you may also be able to get a gunsmith to cut the existing choke out of the existing barrel with a reem and use the poli-choke. the poli-chokes have been around a long time and do work, check with a gunsmith and look at the cost to see which way will be easier on the pocket.

I personally think that the adjustable chokes make the gun a little barrel heavy. So I use choke tubes, I feel that the gun is more balanced because of it. There is also more of a variety of tubes that you can purchase, so you can "custom fit" your shooting needs.
