Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself. I also have question regarding my 97 with a potential algae prob. I changed my fuel filter as part of my routine maint and noticed a gritty sludge in the bottom of the fuel filter bowl, is this infact algae and what type of biocide does anyone recommend to disolve it. I drain my filter every other fuel fill and very rarely if ever get water out of it, so I'm a little po'd about this situation. Truck runs fine, just want to get this before it ends up in my injectors.
If anyone is interested, the truck is 97 4x4 crewcab ,white, offroad unlimited shackle reverse kit in the front 2" spring re-arch in the rear and 35" bfg mud t/a. Thanks for any suggestions.
Don't worry too much about passing algae to the injectors. The factory filter is a 2 micron absolute, not much of anything can get past it.
Plain old Power Service from Wal-Mart (in the white bottle) has a biocide in it. Run it in the next 4-5 tanks then change the filter again. Should get you fixed up.
Howdy James, welcome aboard! This is the best place to get piece of mind, ideas, future mods and answers to just about any question about your truck. Just no cus'n, spitt'n or bite'n allowed!
In (Signature) I'd place what model truck you have and possible mods. It would help folks answer your questions better. Just go to (settings) then to (edit profile).
Hey Cookie ... isnt there something about o'rings showin up as black stuff in the filter prior to a let down. And if it was the o'ring residue, wouldnt other symtoms show up?
Thanks for the welcome and the info guys. I was actually led here by the guys from The Hull Truth boating forum. Some of them suggested that it isn't an algae problem but sedement that forms just from normal use, is this true, and can it be prevented? I owned the truck since it was new and never seen this before, so I am a little confused. I have also run Howes Diesel Treat in the past and have been running their power cleaner regularly for about 4 months, which does not contain a biocide. Truck runs like new I just don't want any catastrophic problems. Thanks again.
Not sure what you're asking me. If the oil o-ring is seeping to the fuel side it will turn the filter black, but other than increased oil consumption you wouldn't even notice it. Until it blows all together, then you get claclk clack clack and billowing clouds of exhaust.
James
It very well could be some sort of "normal" sediment, but that would mean that filter has been in there for a very long time. I've never had any crud in my bowl, or any other that I've looked at.
The few algae problems I've seen either look like little black specks, or when they get larger it's a coppery color, almost translucent glob. I did find something similar to this in the seperator bowl of my prefilter once, but it never made it into the main.

What you described is exactly what I found in the bottom of the bowl, black specks with the globs, which would lead me to believe that my assumption was correct. I just wanted someone else to confirm it. I will get the Power Service like you suggested as well as some spare filters for when this stuff starts to break down. I'll post the progress as time goes on. Thanks again, this board was most helpful.
I believe Builder might be refering to the o-ring on the fuel filter and what might happen if it starts to degrade, just a thought.
