The Hunt for Algae Killer

After looking at the photos of TJ's fuel filter I thought Man-o-man I sure don't want any of that action. One member said he gets "CRC Bio-Con Diesel" at Napa. Another chimed in and stated that another good product is: "BioBor JF".

I hot foot it down to the local Napa Store and they never heard of either of those two products and the guy in the diesel truck dept said he didn't even know that algae grew in diesel fuel.Hmmmmmm

I hit the computer and look up CRC web page....they don't list Bio-Con Diesel. I look up Hammonds "BioBor JF," they have a web page. Their product comes in 16oz bottles $17.95 and will treat up to 800 gallons. It also comes in Qt's, pails, etc. 16 oz/800 gallons, dang that's economy. It then indicates that it's not in the USA as yet. Hmmmmm

I start surfing and run across a forum where a couple of guys are dicussing algae and one said all he ever uses is...you got BioBor JF.

The mid west to the East Coast know all about algae and how to treat it but in No. Calif. it's just dope and illegal aliens.

I then went to a local fuel oil distributor and ask what they do about algae if anything and the gal at the counter puts two (2) bottles in front of me and said "What do you want to do, kill 'em and prevent them or just prevent em"? The product is called Petrolabs "Diesel Power" $9.50, 16oz. (Made in San Diego CA) It claims to do the following:

1) Lubricity Plus
2) Totally disperses water
3) Contains no alcohol
4) treats up to 500 Gals
5) Cleans fuel Injector Systems
6) Controls waxing and gelling
7) Prevents formation of ALGAE and harmful acids
8) Lubricates Clyinder walls
9) Improves fuel economy
10) Reduces exhaust smoke. (Ha, like some of you guys want that to happen)
Add one (1) Oz to every 32 Gals.
And last but not least, drink it....you die!!

So I buy a bottle of this stuff and on the way home I stop at Napa again just to show them that there really is a Diesel fuel Algae problem. As I walked down this one isle I notice that they now have CRC Bio-Con Diesel on the shelves in the auto department. I guess it pays to throw a temper tantrum once in a while.

Anyway, there are at least two (2) products that we can get on the West Coast.

Your Napa has a diesel department with its own "guy" and everything? At my Napa they looked at me crazy when i asked for the anticavitation stuff for my coolant? Luckily the owner was there and over heard me ask the parts jocky at the counter and new what i was talking about. I dont trust the guys at the counter at any parts store.

Well I'll tell ya 97, the handle of "Diesel Parts manager" doesn't mean a whole lot either.

I had algae growing in my fuel last year, I listened to the guys on another site and their suggestion worked. They said dump a whole gallon of the powerservice or whatever its called (alot of people here use it, the maker of diesel kleen) the white bottle into my fuel. I put about 3/4 of the gallon in my tank, ran it and it was fine. I actually got around 25mpg around town, shocked me. Not sure if it was luck that it worked or if it really works, but just a suggestion.

opti-lube XPD is second best, under biodiesel.
i would post the test i have but i think i would get into trouble with some copyright crap.
2 stroke oil is #7 on the list (out of 19)
power service is #10 wich is the last product that actually improves the fuel, the rest after that.....
products such as Marvel, fppf, primrose, and valvtect actually drastically lower the fuels lubricity, so who cares how good they are as anti gel.

I use the Bio-con that you saw on the shelf there. Cleared up my last algae outbreak a few years ago. Gotta beleive it will work for my current one as well as yours. Plus the price is right! $3 here

Heres the super robust real-deal stuff. I'm sure it doesn't do anything but killem, no lubricity. I'm almost afraid to have it next to me as I look at the bottle. Take a whiff of this and you'll understand. The 16oz bottle treats a little under 2,000gal of fuel. I got it at my local International dealer. It worked really well for my problem. Once I smelled it the first time and it killed every last bit of algae in my nose, I will never forget that aroma. The Power service Diesel Kleen stuff has a strong hint of the same smell. http://www.fleetsource.com/ProductDe...00119&CartID=1

thats mt 2¢
