351 what?

I bought a 75 F100 about a month ago and I'm still not sure what 351 engine is in it. The guy I bought it from thought it had come from a 74 LTD but wasn't sure. There is a M on the front of the drivers side cyl head. Does this mean it's a modified? He also said the tranny was a C-6 if that matters.

The only way to tell the difference between the W 351 and the M 351 is the M 351 has 8 valve cover bolts, while the 351W has only 6.

I think also the thermostat housing bolts on top of the intake, instead of the front of it, like a 302 or 351W would.

Yes, that M in the corner makes it a 351M head.

The M was on 400 heads also.

It is on both heads of the 400 that was the original, untouched, engine in my 82 F-250 4x4.

The thermostat on a 351M/400 bolts to the block, not the intake.

351M and 400 heads are identical.

I suppose since the 400 came first they should all be called 400 M heads, but they are also nearly identical to 2V Cleveland heads, so maybe they should be called C heads.

Well I guess I have a 351 modified. This truck is my first project in a really long time but I'm really exited about it. Is there any way I can find out what year the motor came out an what would ya'll suggest I do to it. I'll just drive it to work an back but would like to maybe show it if I ever get it like I want it. Thanks for all your help.

"Well I guess I have a 351 modified"
no, you have 351M. the M doesn't stand for anything

to find out what year it is, post the part number or the 4 digit date code thats next to the oil press. sender.
it looks like this
http://www.projectbronco.com/images/casting.jpg

with the part number i can tell you what it came from and when it was introduced.

With the date code i can tell you what year, month, and day it was made.
