ok i need some help with main bearings for a 351m engine. it has .010 now but all the bearings i bought don't fit they are to big. my question is is there 2 different style bearings for these engines. none of the later ones after 75 would fit and i could not loacte any other ones pre 75 to check. so i ordered some but i'm still not sure they will fit. the block has D0AE on it.
The 335 series (and I'll include the 351W) of engines had 2 main bearings. The early block, up to '77 and later. The locating "tang" is in 2 different locations on the different blocks.
This should be the only difference, the housing bore sizes are the same.
Let me know if you can't find the correct bearings. I think I have both on hand.
the tangs were in different spots and the bearings were to big they where wider than the main bearing saddle and just would not fit. the block has D0AE on it.
No the 351c is a smaller main bearing size.
No one seems to notice even though he posted it twice he is listing a 1970 casting number for a 351M. They didn't make a 351m in 1970 so what exactly the engine is needs to be determined and since you mentioned that the bearings are too big of a diameter my guess would be it's a 351c if it's a 335 series engine.
look at it this way the 400 came out in 1971 why would it have a 1970 casting number? and if it is stock a 1978 car shouldn't have a 351C because they quit building them in 1974 (atleast in the US), and a 78 model 400 wouldn't have the earliest casting number on either of those engines.
Well you need to clean that casting number off, or figure out for sure what you have for an engine. In this case I would almost say take a picture of it, and post it into a gallery (make sure you click that gallery for hidden) and then post the link so we can look at it. Cause it either has a different casting number on it, or it isn't a 400. Now it could be a D1AE casting which would be the first year for the 400, and that I would go along with.
