Question Got the axle code, now what?

Howdy all, I got the axle code on my 1997 F150 4x4, and it's H9. I found that means I have a 3.55 limited slip diff, but what axles do I have? Front and rear? I dont know if its a Ford 9" or a Dana 44, and Lord I'm not gonna try and guess the front. If anyone has a clue, I could use the help. Thanks - DP

The axle supplier to Ford is "Visteon." This is a company that used to be part of Ford, but was separated some years ago to become a supplier to any vehicle manufacturer. The axle plant is in Sterling, MI. In the rear, you have a Visteon axle, with a 9.75 inch ring gear. I don't know as much about the front axle assembly.

Your truck could have either the 9.75" like Chipster mentioned or an 8.8" in the rear.
The front is an 8.8".

Thanks for the info. And if anybody knows about the front setup on my truck, let me know!

I cant find in the manual where it says what size the H9 is, just that it's 3.55 LS but I'll take your word for it

H9 is the ratio code. It could be either a 8.8 or 9.75.
It is the standard Ford code regardless of what size ring gear that it has.
Look up the picture of the cover for the 8.8 @ drivetrain.com and see if yours matches. If not, then it is a 9.75.
