new deisel owner and just wondering something, i found an oil made by castrol, and on the box it reads- universal deisel oil exceeds api ratings CH-4, CG-4, CF-4/SJ, SH.
and the api symbol reads CG-4/SJ.
my question is in my ford deisel supplement manual it says to find an oil with an api symbol rating CG-4/SH. can i use this universal oil anyways because the box says SH on it but the symbol on the bottle does not? or should i stick to ford oil???
The "S" ratings are for gassers anyway, no need to worry about the S(X) rating - you only need to pay attention to the "C" ratings for diesels.
It is interesting that it sounds like Castrol says it exceeds CH-4, but if it was tested it should be on the API "donut" too. Do you have more information on the oil, like the tradename and where you found it?
im gonna go and buy a box of it right now i will be right back, i wanna make sure i said the right info because i saw the oil today and when i got home i just went by memory, be right back.
ok i have the box and a bottle of oil in front of me.here we go, on the box- Castrol RX Super Universal deisel oil (thats in big letters) then on box it says- exceeds specifications API CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF/SJ, SH, Mack EO-M, Cummins. On the bottle- talks about containing viscosity improvers, anti wear add., anti oxidents, and detergents, then it also states that is is approved against the mack EO-M specs and meets preformance requirements of cummins CES 200 71, Cat, navistar, and detroit deisel four stokes. then it says it exceeds again the api rting that i said was on the box. on the donut- api sevice CH-4, CG-4, CF/SJ SAE15W-40. there you go, so i think this oil should be ok, what do you think? i am not sure by what you mean by tradename, and i found this oil at a Costco. i live in canada but i think you guys in the states have them as well.
one more thing, my engine is still under warranty, so should i stick with the ford oil? anyone have any problems with warranty and using different oil?
I checked the Castrol USA website to do a little more investigating. As far as I can see, the RX Super would be fine to use in your diesel. I really can't comment any further than that since I am not familiar with this product.
I will say that I would personally not use it, but not for any reason other than I am happy with the Shell Rotella I have been using for years.
As far as oil brand and your warranty goes, feel free to use whatever you want, just make sure it meets the viscosity and API requirements shown in your owner's manual and you'll be good to go.
ok sounds good, in my owners manual it states that the donut should read api cg-4/sh and the stuff i bought says ch-4, cg-4 cf/sj in the donut, so the sj in there doesnt apply to me right, just because it doesnt say sh instead does not mean its no good?? think thats what you said. just checkin one more time dont want to wreck my rig.thanks for the info really much appreciated.
The API ratings are backwards compatible and are alphabetic, so if your manual wants you to use CH-4 or SH, CI-4 or SJ (or whatever future improvements bring) will be fine.
Good luck with the new rig - I'm sure you'll love it!
hey ford blue, nice to see ya, i havent seen to many others from bc but i am sure there will be more. i got my truck on dec. 17 and love it to death, i was a little leary on buying a deisel because i never had one before but i think i made the right choice. take care
