What's the difference in SJ and SL rating?

What's the difference in SJ and SL rating?

In a 2000 Ranger is SJ OK to use ? I've got oil that only states API Service SJ.

There is not a huge difference, but each change in API rating is a slight improvement. SL was mainly an improvement in volatility over SJ, but there was also a decrease in allowed levels of ZDDP as well. If you have a case of leftover SJ, I would still use it.

Some of the last SJ was made to SL specs but they were not allowed to put SL on the label before the official release date.
