'79 courier 4x4

I currently have a dinky little 140 C.I (2.3L) with a manual 4-spd. I don't like this set up one bit! I want to know if i can replace the stock motor with a V8 and also the biggest thing is the tranny i would like to place a 5-spd in and a better transfer case.

I'm thinking of placing a 351W into the bay but have no idea as to what I can fit as a replacement for the transmission/transfer case. any info would be great.

302 will fit better.

The 302 is easier, as F150daniel pointed out, because it is a little smaller in physical size.

ok so a 302 will fit better...cool any transmission/transfercase suggestions? the courier was replaced by the ranger in late 1982 as a 1983 model. the only thing it has in common with a ranger is its size other than that it seems more like a datsun (it was manufactured by Mazda for Ford).

I had a 76 courrier and read an articale about V-8 in them. I said that a v-8 would fit easy and that stock v-8 motor mounts from a 76-78 mustang were a good fit. I think an auto tranny would be an easyer install.
