Transfer case question - vibration?
I've beed trying to eliminate a vibration I have in the driveline. I notice when I grab the yoke at the transfer case I can shake it and there is some side to side play. Without any diagrams available. What would need replaced in there? Is there a bushing, bearing, etc...? I have a 5.0/5 spd and the slip yoke at the transfer case. I'm not sure which case this is? As far as diagnosis on the vibration I have put in new u-joints (all 4), front wheel bearings, balanaced driveshaft, checked and swapped tires (just in case it was a simple vibration). I think my vibration may be in the transfer case as it does it while coasting and the clutch in. I put the truck in gear and the transfer case in neutral to see if the vibration is in the transmission. it does not vibrate when doing this. I put the rear on jack stands and put it in gear and roweed through the gears and it vibrates. Anyone ever have any troubles with their transfer case similar to this? I got 150,000 miles on the truck.
You should have a Borg Warner 1356 transfer case. The d-shaft yoke slides onto a splined output shaft that is supported by a bearing that is in the back half of the t-case. I had my case apart a year or so ago, so I can't really remember too much, but at the back of the case there is a cone that the d-shaft fits into that unbolts from the t-case (I think that it is held on by 4 T50 fastners). You can remove the d-shaft, unbolt this cone and check the output shaft play on the t-case along with taking a look at the bearing.
I was able to find this picture of the bearing with a search.
