I was wondering how i would be able to check what transfer case i have on my 1986 Ford fullsize bronco (302 with and AOD) I have been told it is a Borg Warner 1345. I am going to replace the AOD with a ZF 5spd some people have told me that the ZF 5spd will just bolt right up to the borg warner 1345. But other have told me that i need a newer Borg warner 1345 because the ZF was introduced in 1988 and the 5spd borg warner 1345 transfer cases are different than borg warner 1345 used on the AOD and is also different than the borg warner 1345 used with the 4spds. I would just like to know if i can use my borg warner 1345(if that is what it is) with the ZF 5spd or should i try to find a borg warner 1356 or what tranfer case should i get.
If it's aluminum, then it's a borg warner. If the shift pattern is straight, it's a 1345. If it goes strait to 4H only, then you have to move the lever sideways for N and 4L then its a 1356.
The B-W transfer cases are actually magneseum, not aluminum.
Anyhow, all of the stransfer cases are interchangable, the bolt pattern and spline count on the input is the same. Where they do differ is the output shaft, some have a fixed yoke, while others have a slip yoke.
A Bronco will have fixed yoke rear output, and, yes the existing transfer case will bolt to a ZF
Like 82 said The Tcase will interchange. All Ford Tcase's use the same round bolt pattern. If you wanted you can even drop that chain driven case and add a 79 back gear driven NP205. They'll bolt right up. the Bronco's used a fixed yoke which the Drive shaft allowed for slip (like a front drive shaft does), Where others used a slip yoke while al,lowed the shaft to travel (like a 2wd truck) instead of the drive shaft.
