Question E-brake cables

Ok, what does it take to get a "quality" part these days??

The scenario: My '69 needed a right side e-brake cable. I ordered a "replacement" from a catalog. I waited in anticipation for my new part. I opened the box to find a "universal" brake cable. Get this.....they take a standard cable, cut the casing, install a short section of plastic tubing over the original casing with two worm hose clamps

They tell you to install the cable as usual and then using the worm clamps adjust the casing for proper length and tighten the clamps

Okay, who actually thinks this cheesy worthless setup is actually going to hold any kind of pressure to the brakes

Press on the e-brake pedal and it basically tries to collapse the plastic tubing. The pedal feels really mushy and will not hold the truck.

What were these people thinking???
Now if the two points were directly in line you could get away with this, but they are NOT!!! You are dealing with a swaying cable between two points that are in different planes. The casing must be secure to enable you to pull the cable tight. If the casing gives, it basically turns into a wet noodle and fails to function.

So...............now I need to try to find an actual factory style cable for my truck. Seeing that the resto people are now selling this worthless crap, anyone know where I can find one. '69 SB F100 right side e-brake cable.

I purchased the left one 14yrs ago. My local places say NLA.

Thanks Fritolay. It is a SWB truck.

Didn't think about the motorcycle shop.....if things don't work out maybe I'll look into it.

Speaking of E-cables.. I had to run without them. I can't find them in any of the parts catalogs or the local stores (NAPA, etc). It seems that if you have a 67-72 4x4, then you're out of luck. I'd still really like to find a set.. it would be nice to be able to set it once in a while..

Ok, here's the real story behind the cable.....

I CUT IT

My '69 had been out of commission for a couple years. I finally got a motor for it and the truck would NOT roll. The right rear brake had rusted up on it. I thought it was the e-brake....so I cut the cable thinking it would release It didn't

Here is was just the shoes against the drum

So I cut a perfectly GOOD cable

Now I can't seem to replace it.

I'll check the links

Thanks guys

I had exactly the same problem, which was compounded by the fact that I have HD brakes. I either couldn't find them, or when I did and ordered them they were wrong. I found a company called Control Cables that will make them exactly as you want them for a pretty fair price. Workmanship is great and they have just about any kind of fitting you need. Give them a call at (562)949-0455 and they will send you a form that helps with the specs. I made some rough drawings and showed lengths and they sent me all three of mine. They fit perfectly. I think their web is www.controlcables.com Hope this helps.
