Today I started hearing a faint grinding sound between 1000-2000 rpms. It does it in gear or out. A/C on or off. I can best discribe the noise like using a grinding wheel to sharpen a knife. zing.. zing.. It varies in loudness. Under the hood, it sounds like maybe the PS pump. While turning the wheel, it makes no noise however. I suppose it could be a high pitched metal vibration. AUGGGHHH!!! :-X23 I'd like to narrow it down before hitting the dealer.. Thanks.

Man, I never heard anything like that,hope I don't.
Someone will get on and help you.
I seem to remember an alternator craping out like that, making grinding noise when put under load. It was on a 99 E450.
I'd start first by taking off the belt and spining the all the pullys looking for a dry/sticky one.
V10man, I should have been a little more helpful in my first post. I tried to edit it but it wouldn't let me?
Anyhoo, sounds like the problem I had more times than I care to remember with my '89 F250 and a series of crappy alternators. Is the alternator excessively hot after a period of driving? I'd start by taking the serpentine belt off and checking the alternator pulley. Sounds to me like the bearings in the alternator are shot.
There, that's the post I should have put up the first time.
It doesn't matter if I'mmoving or not. I can rev the engine in the driveway(1000-2000rpms) and hear the noise. It does seem louder when I'm giving it the gas. Turning the wheel has no effect on the noise. Actually there isn't any of the typical PS noises(maybe it's not the PS) It does come and go. When the engine is cold it isn't there. I'll tell ya it is the oddest darn sound... Thanks for the tips.
Wasn't there an issue with the belt tensioner at one time? I do know that there have been failures or "noises" from some of the tensioners used on F150s.
