I just recently bought a '90 f250 Lariat XLT 4x4, 460 w/ E4OD. Had it shipped up to MN from TN in late Dec. Seller said tranny was rebuilt this year. When I got the truck, it shifted very hard, and was through all gears by 35-40 mph, and lugging. Reverse sometimes kills the truck. Seller said I needed to "have my trans man hook up one of them trans tools to set the shift points while I drive it" (sic). He said it shifted smoothly when he was pulling loaded trailers.
Anyway, local Ford dealer said all electricals were operating properly. and there are no electronics that can be set through PCM or anywhere else. They opened the pan and found fiber and metal shavings, so we closed it up under the assumption that it's shot.
Local wrench (a good one) said to rebuild a c6 so that I would have a bulletproof reverse. The truck is primarily intended as a plow truck. Yea, I'd lose the OD, but that may not make a lot of difference with the 460.
IS THE E4OD SHOT? IS THE C6 A BOLT-IN SWAP? WHAT DO I HAVE TO LOOK FOR WHEN UNDERTAKING THIS PROJECT?
Well, you are going to screw something up with taking out the E4OD, because the computer will not work right. You are going to have to find an older computer and wireing harness for the C6. Even though the C6 does not have any electrical garbage on it, the computer will notice the tranny is gone. In the late 80's, c6's were still being used, so you should be able to find a wiring harness and PCM pretty easy in the local boneyard.

Actually the C6 was used with the 460 through the end of the 1996 model year. Most trucks were E4OD, but there were some C6 trucks, too.
i think the fact that there are some bits of metal in the pan means the tranny is shot. I mean, things wear and friction will cause pieces to abrade off. However, I imagine that 'chunks' of metal is bad news.
But does anyone know whether the c6 will be a bolt-in swap?
I'll be searching for a c-6 to fit behind a 460, on a 4x4, f250. I don't think the lift kit will affect anything behind the transfer case, (but not positive). I know I'll have to tap a vacuum line, and I'll just leave the electricals from the E4OD hanging, but are there any other concerns?
But if the c6 uses different length drivelines, doesn't that reposition the transfer case?, and then it follows where the shifter comes through the floor would be moved, too?
