1991 4x4 302/Mazda 5sp to 460/E4OD
Hi All,
I know this question gets asked a lot, and I tried a search through the forum... just want to nail it down. If I do the swap I will write it up...
Anyway I have a 1991 F-250 (actually more like a F-350), 4x4 with 302 and Mazda 5 speed. The engine knocks and the slave cylinder for the clutch just went. I really want a 460 and auto transmission. I have found a reasonably priced E40D and matching transfercase out of a '95 F-250. If going to this transmission engine combo, will I need to move my transmission cross member? If so is the frame already drilled? Also I THINK it was an E4OD, the pan measured 20", but I don't remember seeing an electrical hook up to control the shift solenoids, where is the connector located on the trans? Could a '95 be ordered without OD (just a C6?)?
The seller of the trans may still be able to get the matching 460 (sold to a friend that can't come up with the cash). If he can't, and I end up having to find another, any reason why one out of a 2 wheel drive truck wont do?
What about the transfercase shift linkage? Transmission selector linkage? Does the ECM control the transmission or is there another box? I know I could use a Baumannator to control the transmission, but if the EFI ECM has it built in that will save a few dollars to start.
I know I would need:
- Engine mounts and adapter "plates" (but the crossmember should be OK). Anyone have Ford part numbers?
- New rad
- Rad hoses
- Steering column from auto, or perhaps an aftermarket floor shifter?
- EFI ECM for engine, what for transmission?
- 460 EFI including exhaust manifolds
- Short rear drive shaft?
Thanks.

well i think i might be able to help on a few of the questions. as far as engines go, an engine is an engine. shouldnt matter at all if you get it from a 2 by or 4 by. you could look to l and l for mounts and radiator, headers, all sorts of good stuff(www.landlproducts.com). and if you are sure its a 95 tranny from a 460, its not gonna be a c6, they stopped puttin those in in 87? and for the motor, make sure you get all the harness and computer related wiring. this will save lots of time later down the road. good luck, hope this helps
