K&N Filter and MAF Sensor problem
>>been around for years!

>Yup,my 62yr.old Ford tractor has it.
Of course!!! I've had lots of vehicles with oil bath filtration!
But they all idled and ran fine.I bet the 62 yr old tractor can tick those cylinders off alot better than these new advanced oil impregnated
filtered boat anchors! They don't even make good boat anchors they're
aluminum!

'My question was, is all the trouble they cause, worth the gain of 1-2 hp at most? My answer is No!Whats a Maf cost? $150-$200????? I don't know but it ain't cheap, down time when you have stop and clean it.

Seriously, I hope no one buys K&N (or similar) filters just for their supposed peformance gain. Even if they did give you 3 HP, that quickly goes away as the filter does it's job & becomes "dirty". The best reason to have one is for the savings in cost of replacement paper filters.
Also, I would say that very few of the many thousands of filters being used have caused problems. And they do filter very well. Most of the concern about bug & water injestion is unfounded. We "mud-bogged" our previous '97 Expedition and the K&N filter kept the intake PERFECTLY CLEAN. This wasn't thick mud either- one person left their vent on and water came through the ducts. I can assure you that if the filter didn't work, the intake would have been full of muddy water too- especially since the K&N was open under the hood. See some muddy pics and K&N mod in the gallery.

BTW, I never did get all the mud out of the engine compartment.

I would hope they wouldn't expect hp gains!

why risk the chance of $150-200 for a maf/to cost of a paper filter
I can change alot of paper filters for that money.

:-staunDam..it felt a lot quicker!!! NOT.
The only thing the K&N FIPK does better than the stock system is look cooler, not worth the $$$.

Never said the filters can't cause problems nor did I intend to infer that K&N is a great company (I actually don't think they are). Just stating what I believe to be true. There are many thousands of K&N-type filters being used but only a handful of MAF failures. With those kinds of numbers, it's difficult to say the filters are universally "bad".
