I have a F150 4.2. It has 70,000 miles. The service engine soon light came on. I had the code pulled it gave me the P0174 too lean on bank 2. The truck runs fine no problems there. I have been running a K&N filter since it was new. I heard that after a while the oil gums up the MAF sensor. My question, is this true, and also how do I find the sensor and clean it?I also was told it could be cheap gas. I had the code erased, but after a day or so it came back on. Any help will be appreciated. Is there a diagram any where to help me find the MAF sensor?
If you want to clean the MAF sensor: remove the air filter and look "in there" with a flashlight. See the little coiled up wire? That's the MAF sensor.
You can spray it off with electronics cleaner. Don't bend it or break it.
I have used K&N filter for a total of over 200,000 miles on two different F150's. Never had a problem and I doubt that is your problem - unless you put way too much oil on the filter.
Be sure to check for vacuum leaks - especially at/around the PCV valve.
You can use the "search" feature on the banner at the top of this page to search for "P0174" and you'll find a good bit of info - just here iin the 4.2 / 3.8 forum

Some 2001-2003 F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage and 2001-2003 E-150/250 vehicles equipped with a 4.2L engine may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1131 and/or P1151 (system too lean bank 1 or 2). This condition may be due to leaking isolator bolts/port gaskets in the upper-to-lower intake manifold mounting area. This condition is sometimes intermittent and may not be apparent on a warmed-up engine.
I found my problem, I hope. I took off the air cleaner to clean the MAF sensor and noticed the gasket on the air cleaner had peeled down in one area. After cleaning the MAF sensor, changing fuel filter and repairing the gasket the SES light has not come back on. I did the repair 5 days ago. I was lucky, mine was a cheap repair. Thanks for all your help.
