Fuel filter cost

One of the reasons for the diesel smell is when you drain the fuel filter bowl, the tube isn't long enough and gets diesel underneath and along the front of the engine. An easy fix for this is to clamp a hose to the factory tube and extend it down far enough so it can be drained into a container. I'm not positive on the size of hose but I think it's a 5/16, don't remember for sure it's been awhile since I've done mine. Make the hose long enough so you can tie it off or wrap it around something so it's always there.

I use a 30" length of old garden hose.
It's easy to push up and slide right over the steel drain tube and I stuff the other end into a plastic milk jug .
No mess and no fuel smell when I am done.
