Just wanted to post that I had originally bought a fuel filter from NAPA, was their "gold" edition and cost me $32! I thought that was a little high so I stopped by the local International dealer, only cost me $19. I returned the Napa one! They offered two sizes, my engine used the taller one (about 4"tall), the other was considerably shorter.
Try Shopdiesel.com the Racor fuel filters are $15.80 and the Motorcraft oil filters are $11.00. There shipping isn't too bad either. I usually order a few of each at a time, keeps me stocked up and makes it real convenient.
I get my Racor filters from Diesel Injection Service. I get a few while I'm also picking up the coolant test strips, coolant additive, and Stanadyne. Here is a link.
I change my fuel filter every 3-4k They are too easy to not change. I also run a seperat fuel strainer and water seperator. but that 's me coming up fron the marine engine side you can never have to many filters/seperators
Since changing the fuel filter has such a profound effect of the performance of the engine, I typically change mine every 6000 miles, or just prior to getting on a dyno, whichever happens first.
I'm still stocking up on the $2.99 oil filters (Purolator) from Sears. They only stock two at a time so I have to stop in every now and then and clean them out....
I haven't changed one myself - but it seems like there's a diesel smell eveytime I had the dealership change it. Is there a way to change the thing with out dripping diesel all over???
