I have a 2000 Expedition with about 50K miles and Jiffy Lube indicated that I needed to replece the transmission fluid. However, they said that the fuild was very expensive and that they were not able to do it. This doesn't sound right to me. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Welcome to FTE! I think they just didn't feel like doin it. The fluid is not all that expensive. You could even do the job yourself. If you have the 4R100 tranny, most 2k 5.4L engines do, there will be a drain plug on the pan, and the torque convertor, so it makes the job easy. Check the tech articles, there is one on changing tranny fluid.
The guy at Jiffy Lube did you a tremendous favor. He could have palmed off one of those generic fluids that purportedly act as a substitute for both Mercon and Mercon V.
If you have any doubt in your ability to do this job correctly, take it to a Ford dealer or an established transmission shop.
You can do it yourself. Buy 16 quarts of fluid, a filter, and give yourself a couple of hours. The fluid in the torque converter drains slower than from the trannsmission oil pan. The cold weather doesn't help either. I did it today, it was not difficult at all. I think I got a good bit out and I refilled it w/15 1/2 qts of Mobil 1 ATF.
How bad is mixing old transmission fluid with new Mobil 1 synthetic. When it warms up a little, I'm going to service my transmission and refill it with Mobil 1 syn (Currently, it has whatever Ford puts in it). I was planning on draining the transmission and torque converter (through the provided drain plugs) and then refilling. However, I have the tow package with the trans cooler, so some old ATF will be left in those lines and the cooler. Is this bad or should I try and drain that little bit of ATF out, too?
While I'm in there, I'm also going to install a Nordskog digital transmission temp. gauge (sending unit in the inspection port).
I did the same thing you did, I did not drain what was in the transmission cooler or radiator. I suspect w/o going and paying for someone to professionally blow out the lines, you won't get that much more out. From what I have read, on other posts, I believe that little remaining ATF won't hurt anything. My manual says my truck has an approx 16 qt ATF capacity and it took 15 1/2 qts to refill. I think I did pretty good.
