I have a 97 xlt expedition with about 85,000 miles. what is the reliablitiy of these rigs? So far we have had to replace plugs (no biggy, but labor intensive with the COP design), AWD module ( That hurt) , and a few little things but all in all not a bad unit.
My question is, should I be looking at trading up to a newer one, before I run into HUGE problems? Or do I have time? What mileage will I start having to look at the major repairs? (not that the AWD mod was cheap) but I am thinking of big issues like engine/tranny etc. Or am I about to be 2 bitted to death on small repairs.
I know no one has a crystal ball, but i was looking for feedback from others who have units with this or higher mileage, and the problems they ran into.
Issues we have to contend with now are passengerside door lock makes an aweful sound when power door locks engage, rear middle seat belt will not pull out...So I have to get those fixe.No biggy I dont think
I currently have 120,000 on my 98, and haven't had any problems. I know there are more with more miles, and very little extensive work. As long as you keep it well maintained, it should last you a long while.
My wife has a 97 expy. bought it 1.5 years ago with 82k. now has 114k. changed the plugs at 98k, the shocks last week, fuel sensor, door ajar switch in the drivers door several months ago, trans service when the plugs were done, runs excellent. no problems with anything, local dealer does all the work on it. we have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon, maybe at 200k I will think about it.
A new Expy will cost about $25,000 and your trade. Even with unwelcome repairs, the fact that your Expy is now on such a slow depreciation curve means your cost per mile will be pretty low compared to a new one. As long as the body and frame are sound, it makes sense to keep the old one.
Keep it until at leats 200K miles with the factory recommended maintenance. Very low upkeep compared to others. And, you will know it's history. Mine is still great and reliable at 122K miles.
don't know about you, but i can't afford to be trading out of something i know into a big question mark. my plan- run em till the wheels fall off! keep em maintained and do what you can do yourself.
for perspective- i do not buy new rides. currently have 3 vehicles, all pre-owned, and no car payments:
-83 buick electra wagon
old war horse. currently has 230k miles. re-engined at 150k, re-transmissioned at 90.
-86 olds cutlass ciera coupe
currently at 263k. daily driver and tough. no engine or trans problems so far, knock on wood! everything works-ac, power antenna, windows, seats, locks. small V6 with a carburator.
-97 e.b. expy
bought with just under 49k miles, now 3 yrs later has a little over 67k. a garage queen....
I have a 99 XLT and I'm currently at 126K...just the usual oil change at 3000 miles and the plugs and fuel filter changed at 100,000 miles. Plus the usual wear and tear like brake pads, tires, etc.
My best Ford so far FYI I got to 100k miles in 2002 due to a lot of highway driving and no problems whatsoever.
I enherited my dad's 97 4x4 5.4 with 158k miles and it still pulls my 9300 lb. boat like a champ. Just remember, it's mechanical and needs regular maintenance. She will treat you as well as you treat her.
165,000+ here. Runs like a raped ape! Looks great, turns heads, and no problems whatsoever.... with the exception of an alternator replacement! Run it till the wheels fall off.... then pull over, put them back on and run it some more!
