#8 is missing pretty bad in my truck, gotta change out the COP, but its 16 degrees out today and I don't have access to a garage. I was wondering if I could cause any damage to the engine by driving the truck before fixing the miss. One last thing, #8 is on the passenger side, right? Thanks guys.
Well, it is never good to drive a newer vehicle with a dead cylinder. The reaw fuel that doesn't get burned will try to foul the plug, O2 sensor and is not good for the cat converter either. Not to mention the vibration.
But, if you have no choice, then drive it if you have too. That sure is aweful cold to be out in the open to work on a COP.
Do you know anyone who will let you borrow some garage space long enough to repair it?
Jimmy
Unfortunately none of my buddys out here have a garage available, and if they do, its not high enough to get the truck into.... Had to drive it a decent distance today for a job interview, didn't have a choice, so I am just gonna sack up tomorrow and tackle it. Thanks for the help guys.
Well, I change it out and it didn't seem to help any. When I pulled the plug it was kinda wet, but not too bad... After I changed the COP and disconnected the battery to clear the computer, I went for a test drive and it still had a rough idle, vibration at speed, ect... Check engine light came back on too.... This is killing me.
On the cyclinders I was getting a HARD code reading on #5 & 8 with 'key-on-engine-off', I found the problem was the connections between the COP and the spring. I removed the rubber boot from the COP and gently twisted and pulled the spring out of the COP. The connector inside the plastic housing was corroded/oxidized, probably caused by moisture and lack of a good tight fitting. I took some emory cloth and a small file and cleaned and sprayed them with a little electric contact cleaner. Next I slightly crushed the end of the spring to ensure a tighter fit.
I went through the rest of the COPs and found the same thing, even though they were not registering but were intermittent. Cleaned them up as well and now it runs great and I didn't need to purchase any new components
Might be worth pulling one of the easier COPs and inspecting it.
