Ok so i have a good fried who just got his first superduty, its pretty nice. He had it for a a couple months before it developed an intermittent miss on #8. I cant remeber the code his shop pulled, but they said the code ment he was loosing compression. So i went over and looked at his truck drove it and here is what i think.
First- the truck does feel like it misses when the engine is cold but when it warms up that miss goes away.
Second- I see fuel in the coolent bottel, so one or more of his injector cups could be bad.
Could his #8 cup be bad causing some water to get in and some pressure to get out. That could show up as a low compression cylinder to the ses light.
Being that the miss is not constant i dont think his cylinder has bad compression or it would miss all the time, also a dead hole would cause it to smoke, right?
I ask this cause the shop told him the motor had to come out cause his cylinder was dead.
I just think it could be a combo fuel cup/ bad injector
You're probably right -- seems that those do go from time to time. But remember that when the engine heats up, it expands so a crack could close up after reaching operating temp. The fuel getting into the coolant should be a one-way path -- it's under much more pressure than the cooling system.
Thats true a crack could seal up, but if it was completley dead i would think it would run way rough in the morning and smoke a lot more. You can tell the engine is missing but its not like a constant miss it very sparatic. I told him to get a LL injector and a cup and we will try that before we go way in depth
Could be one way or the other. If it were me, I wouldn't replace it with a LL. Just put a much quieter standard (AB I believe) in there. In fact, I'm planning on replacing my #8 with a standard one. That thing is noisy!! Then again, I have the CCK and Hutch so it won't be susceptible to fuel starvation like it is stock...
