I inherited a 68 f-100 from dad that he bought from the original owner. Under the hood in grease pencil it says "360 cubic inch engine". Stamped on the front right below the drivers side head it says 352. Is this an engine code or just a random number? How can I find out what size the engine really is?
It's an FE series motor (352, 360,390,428 among others). Most all have 352 stamped on the block.
you probably have a 360. But the only real way to tell is to measure the stroke and the bore. These old trucks have seen some motor swapping in their time. You could get luck and find a 390 or even better. Usually, it works out the other way. Someone thinks thay have a 390 and find a 360.
There all good motors. Check the FE engine forum (a bit further south on the main forum page). There are a lot of good folks that go there frequently and provide a great deal of good information about these motors.
Almost all FE's have 352 on the block. Use the search feature with "measure" and "stroke" as search parameters and you will find out how to determine engine size. If you know the engine is original, the 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code - Y in 68 meant 360, "H" meant 390
If you can find a casting number on the block, you can possibly tell what engine you have. A 360 from 1968 should have one of 5 different numbers on it
C6ME/C6ME-A/C8AE-A/C8AE-C/C8AE-E
The C6ME-A casting is also shared with the 1967 352, but the other numbers are all 360's
Thanks for all of the great info. I have not been able to check the casting numbers yet, too busy with the ps conversion. I have another engine ID problem as well. I bought a 76 f-250 for steering parts and ran a vin check on the link provided on this site. The vin check said the truck has a 400 in it, but it looks like an FE block. I called NAPA for parts and told them I had a 400 and the guy said the computer didn't show a 400 in a 76.
An FE will have part of the intake manifold under the valve cover. Put another way, the valve cover bolts onto both the head and the intake. Since the pushrods run through the intake manifold, you must remove the intake to pull the heads.
If you engine has these features, you have an FE. If not .....
I promised myself that if I switch out/modify the engine I will mark it somewhere in the engine compartment, sounds like someone may have done this for you. I probably won't be the last owner of this truck either. Seems like they outlast owners, LOL.
