I have a 460 motor out of a 76 pickup. The stock stroke for a 460 is 3.9". I have purchased a 4.5" stroker kit containing crank and rods to create a 544 ci motor (with the block bored to .030). Would this motor need modified heads or is there enough deck clearance with stock heads to allow the change in stroke??
You'll need to mock up the crank and rod and check for clearance issues with the block skirt and cylinders at the bottom. If I am not mistaken you need .060 clearance between the rod bolts and the skirt. You can use any heads you want as the design of the stroker keeps the pistons inside the deck. Check with who you bought the stroker kits to make sure what I wrote is correct.
Factory stroke is actually 3.85". You should have no problem with stock heads, but I highly recommend a set of D0VE or equivelant, or even Iron CJ(D0OE-R) or PI heads(D2AE). A set of Al SCJ heads would be great, but I don't know the budget, so these are only suggestions.
